What is arthritis?

Arthritis is a name for a group of conditions affecting the joints. It can affect many different parts of the joint and nearly every joint in the body. In Australia, one in seven people have arthritis.

Anyone can get arthritis, including children and young people. Many people think arthritis is a normal part of getting older, but in fact, two out of every three people with arthritis are between 15 and 60 years old. Arthritis can affect people from all backgrounds, ages and lifestyles.

When you have arthritis, joint pain and weakness can make normal activities difficult. You might find some tasks cause pain or strain, and other activities become almost impossible. Although arthritis can be difficult to live with, there are some simple measures that can help you manage your symptoms and live a full life.
