Make Every Step Count
Limber up, be a hero and get ready to make a difference to your own life and the lives of those you love by taking part in Time to Move 2016.
At its core is a challenge for you to walk 10,000 steps a day for 7 days and put a spring in your step and life. That is the recommended number of steps that should be walked each day to keep fit and healthy.
There are tools that can help you. You can build up to your 10,000 steps a day with an easy-to-understand walking plan called Time to Move, developed by Arthritis South Australia and adopted by affiliates throughout Australia.
You can also use a simple pedometer or a Fitbit. If you want to take the plunge and get friends to sponsor your 10,000 step-a-day quest, Arthritis SA will give you a pedometer if you need one. Arthritis SA suggests tech-savvy readers set up a fundraising page on Go Fundraise to do this. However, good ol’ pen and paper can be used too – just ensure you get the full names and addresses of people who sponsor you and the amount they have given so Arthritis SA can issue them with a receipt for their tax deductible donations.
If you notify Arthritis SA of your plans to get sponsorship for your walk and send us a good clear picture of yourself – electronic or hard copy – Arthritis SA will publish your photo and details on its facebook page and insert a link to your fundraising page if you have set one up.
Research has found that regular exercise is one of the most effective treatments for arthritis. Just as importantly, physical activity will improve your overall health. Several fact sheets on arthritis and exercise are available on Arthritis SA’s website.
