Tips to help you when travelling this festive season

Do you have long distances to travel this Christmas and New Year? Here are a few of our top tips to help you manage your arthritis while travelling:

Travelling by car:

- Plan ahead - know where your rest stops are

- Have a few exercises you can do while travelling and when resting

- Take a small esky with you and keep a cool pack in it

- Go for a short walk before you start your journey

- Pack the car the night before

- Check that your seat, mirrors and seat belts are in the right position (even if you are the passenger) before you leave

- Bring a cushion or back rest if you need one

Travelling by plane:

- Ensure that you have a letter and a usb from your doctor stating which medications and medical history if travelling overseas

- Pack your medications in your hand luggage in case your luggage is lost

- Ensure that you have enough medication for the duration of your trip if you are going overseas as prescriptions may only be valid in Australia.

- If you are travelling domestically you may want to consider giving a relative a copy of your prescriptions in case you need them while away

- Make sure you are packed in advance

- Put your bags in the car the night before (if possible) and add anything else such as toiletries in the morning or in your carry-on

- Use a trolley to cart your bags from the car-park to the terminal

- Bring a neck pillow or cushion with you if you need

- When flying, walk up and down the aisles to stretch out and massage your legs to help maintain good circulation

- If you need to use oxygen while travelling make sure that you contact your airline well in advance to arrange this

- If you have difficulty walking or use a walker consider contacting your airline in advance and arrange to use a wheel chair
